How it works
How Pay Plan works
Five things, and the figure they add up to. Nothing here needs a spreadsheet, and nothing here changes your money without you saying so.
Safe to spend
One figure, for the days between now and your next pay. Fortnightly Thursdays, weekly Wednesdays, the 20th of the month: the plan follows your pay cycle rather than the calendar month, and the cycle strip counts down to the next pay day. Spend the figure and the plan still works.
Bank feeds
ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Kiwibank, Westpac and TSB connect through Akahu, the open-banking service the banks work with, so your spending lands in the plan without you typing it. Pay Plan never sees your banking password, and you can disconnect a bank whenever you like. Or type things in yourself; both work, and a manual budget is a whole budget.
Shared budgets
For couples, families and flats. Up to six people share one budget, each with their own view of it, so everyone sees what is left without sharing a bank login. Bills split on a fair share of what each person earns, or evenly, whichever the household agrees on. A member on the free plan joins without paying anything, and a Household plan gives everyone in the budget Plus, paid by the budget's owner.
Penny
Penny, the optional AI assistant, reads your own plan and explains it: where a category has drifted, which bill has gone up, what a change would do to the figure. It gives general budgeting information about the money you already have, and it never recommends a bank, an insurer, a loan or any other financial product. Every proposal waits for your confirmation before anything changes, and you can turn Penny off in one tap.
How the number is made
Pay this fortnight
$4,598.06
Weekly, fortnightly, four-weekly or monthly. The cycle starts the day it arrives, so a pay that comes on a Thursday makes a plan that runs Thursday to Thursday.
Left from last fortnight
$84.20
What the last fortnight did not use, where the plan carries it over.
Bills this fortnight
−$1,549.00
Rent, power, phone, insurance. Only the ones that come out before the next pay count, so a bill due after pay day is the next cycle's problem rather than this one's.
Goals set aside
−$300.00
Emergency fund, holiday, bike. Set aside each fortnight, so they never count as safe to spend, and shown as progress rather than as money you still have.
Spending, planned or spent
−$1,053.47
Groceries, transport, eating out: what you planned, or what you have spent if that is more.
Safe to spend
Each fortnight, after everything you have already decided. Spend it knowing the bills and goals are covered.
